Gage Palmer swings back by to pick up the signed paperwork, telling himself it’s in-and-out. Quick stop, clean signature. Done. He’s all business, and he doesn’t make a habit of coming by twice. He just needs Johnny Ford to put ink on the line.
Johnny Ford opens the door, surprised but cocky. Like, he’s been waiting for him. He’s way too relaxed, way too pleased with himself, and Gage can see it immediately: Johnny’s convinced Gage didn’t come back for the paperwork. He came back for more. And the worst part? Gage can’t even act offended, because Johnny’s grin says he already knows he’s right.
Gage asks for the papers. Johnny shrugs. Not signed. Not even close. Instead, Johnny leans in with that same unbothered confidence, turning a simple business visit into a game. He talks slowly, pushes buttons, keeps Gage standing there just long enough to start slipping. Gage insists he’s here for one thing only: a signature. And he repeats it like it’s going to make it true.
Johnny doesn’t let up. He’s relentless, teasing, and annoyingly charming about it, as if “customer service” were his personal religion. And Gage? Professional, disciplined, Gage? He finally realizes something uncomfortable: looking after his customers’ needs is the job. This time, it just takes on a whole new meaning.
