CHAPTER 1: THE INTERVIEW
Apprentice Woodz examined himself in the mirror, ensuring his shirt was tucked in tight and there wasn’t a hair out of place as he prepared for his first meeting with The Order. Having been raised by a family of faith, the tall young lad had always felt closely aligned with their teachings. He had learned the majority of what he knew from his parents who distilled a strong sense of morality into him over the years. Rules were put in place for a reason and Zander grew to understand that things ran much more smoothly when you followed those rules. So he remembered that he was representing God as well as the church when he was ‘dressed in his Sunday best’ and gave himself extra time to shave and make himself look presentable.
A mixture of nerves and excitement washed over him like the waters of a baptismal bath. Only instead of giving him clarity the hopeful candidate was left ambivalent. Not knowing which to settle on left him a bit anxious, which could be seen as he fiddled with his collar and fidgeted with tightening his belt buckle for the third time. Zander still hadn’t had much experience when it came to the world outside of his family farm and the small town he grew up in. It’s part of the reason he chose the path that he did, he sought out the company and community of those who he believed would be likeminded individuals.
CHAPTER 2: ATONEMENT
The Order is a serious organization with real power and real consequences. The apprentices must be impressed with that before they can be trusted with the higher secrets that masters wield. The Atonement ritual is one step in their training. It is inevitable that, as they pass one trial after another, they will begin to feel proud of themselves. When we sense that in them, we know that the Atonement is necessary. The masters who have been a part of the apprentice’s training gather in the dark room and the bench is brought out. The apprentice is brought to the chamber, not knowing what will happen.
As with all of the rituals, others before them have been warned not to share what will happen, but we know they do. Boys will be boys. In the end, half whispered secrets just make the dread and intimidation that much stronger. They are not wandering in naive and unsuspecting. When they see it, they know what will happen, or think they know. What they don’t realize is that we don’t expect success. In fact, what we are looking for is failure.
CHAPTER 3: THE COVENANT
Standing in front of a large mahogany door, Apprentice Woodz nervously awaited his call to perform the next trial. He was naked, his athletic frame on full display. He told himself that he hadn’t enjoyed his progression into the Order, but his long straight erection betrayed him. He had unlocked a portion of his mind he thought he had thrown away the key to, years ago. CHAPTER 4: ORDINATION
Growing up on our family farm in the country, I had few friends. It wasn’t that my parents tried to keep me isolated, but the distance from home to town made casual socializing impractical. Once I left school for the day and made the almost thirty-minute drive to the farm, going back to town to hang out with friends was difficult, especially if I was going to get back home before any kind of meaningful curfew.
However, graduating from high school meant looking ahead to my future. I knew that I did not want to spend my life on my parent’s farm. I was painfully aware that I was somewhat naive to the ways of the world, and with no real social circle to support me in my journey to adulthood, I could “fall in with the wrong crowd” without even meaning to. One of my uncles was a member of a secret society called The Order. When I asked him about it, he made it clear that he couldn’t have any involvement in my membership, but he did tell me that he was once in a similar position to myself, growing in the country. A teacher that he was somewhat close to had pointed him towards The Order, and he had never regretted joining.
